Please Don't Drink and Drive.

If everyone chose to be responsible and never got behind the wheel of car drunk, 1,029 more people would be alive in California. That's how many died in alcohol-related crashes in 2008 in our state. Nationwide, 11,773 people died in alcohol-related crashes in the United States (the latest statistics available). California is second only to Texas with the most-alcohol related deaths in the US.  You probably didn't hear about the more than 1,000 accidents or the lives they claimed - many of them innocent. But it is important to know that the consequences of drinking and driving are deadly. More people died in 2008 in alcohol-related accidents in California than the total number of US troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2008.

Ways to Stop Drunk Driving

If we all take the problem of drunk driving seriously, we can make a difference. Starting with yourself, here are some ways you can help stop drunk driving in your community:

Understand Why Drunk Driving Destroys Lives: Even if you never will drink and drive, you still could be a victim of an alcohol-related crash, because you share the road with others. Encourage friends and others to use safe ride programs offered in your community.

Learn the Facts about Drunk Driving: 68% of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities involved a driver with a BAC level of .15% or higher (Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration / Fatality Analysis Reporting System). To learn more, see our statistics page.

Be a Responsible Host: Never encourage friends who have been drinking to drive at the end of a party. Always provide plenty of food, and have someone designated who will not be drinking to drive people home, or arrange to call a taxi.

Report Drunk Drivers: If you see a drunk driver on the road, inform local law enforcement by calling 911. Remember, after a crash, it is too late.

Be a Leader: Remember that actions speak louder than words. Explain to your family, friends and acquaintances why drunk-driving is unacceptable.

Please don't drink and drive, no matter how confident you are that you can get home safely. It's not worth the risk. Every life lost to drunk driving is a tragedy that affects not just the victim,  but their family and friends and countless other lives. Make the choice today to never, ever drink and drive, and not let your friends drive drunk.
